Wearing white after Labor Day may seem like a big fashion faux pas, but it's really a rewarding risk fashionistas should take. Imagine the limitless outfits you could create with white denim jeans, a cream lace dress and an ivory blazer -- in the fall and winter months. It opens up a whole new section to your closet that is dying to get out and be worn year-round.

How to... wear white after Labor Day

Imagine the limitless outfits you could create with white denim jeans, a cream lace dress and an ivory blazer -- in the fall and winter months. It opens up a whole new section to your closet that is dying to get out and be worn year-round.

Step 1: Picking a fabric

When it comes to wearing white, we have to remember that there are certain fabrics that are appropriate for spring and summer months, and some better suited for fall and winter. Light cotton and linen fabrics are out, while cashmere, heavy cotton and corduroy are in. Tuck away your white linen pants, keep wearing your white denim jeans, and say hello to big chunky cream-colored sweaters. Pair your white skinny jeans with a chambray shirt and brown leather boots for a cute, comfortable look in the fall. Then pair your big cream sweater with black skinny jeans and flats for the winter months. Both looks are easy to create and perfect for the months following Labor Day.

Step 2: 50 shades of white

As with fabrics, picking the correct shade of white after Labor Day is key to getting the right look. Bone, ivory, off-white and cream are some favorites to wear in the fall and winter months. A closet staple like a crisp white tailored blouse is always in. Tuck it into a black pencil skirt for work or wear it untucked with a pair of skinny jeans and pumps for a night out. Since lace overtook most of our wardrobes this summer, why not keep a good thing going? Don’t put your favorite pieces away for the rest of the year -- pair your cream lace shorts and/or dress with black tights and booties to make a summer staple look wintry.

pearl necklaceStep 3: Whiten up your accessories

Not only can you continue to wear your white wardrobe year-round, you can also accessorize with the various shades of white. Carrying a cream leather bag complements a winter wardrobe perfectly. Adding an ivory belt to a little black dress or adding a simple pearl necklace to the ensemble are other ways to play up white accessories in the months after Labor Day. Cream-colored berets, scarves and gloves add a youthful vibe to any look and are a fun way to spice up a casual outfit.

Step 4: Let’s get some shoes

While some white shoes should be put away after Labor Day, there are still plenty that can make their way out of your closet into the fall and winter seasons. Tuck away your white espadrilles, cork wedges and sandals but feel free to pull out your cream-colored combat boots, flats and bone leather pumps. These pumps are a perfect complement to your LBD and can also be worn with black, blue and white skinny jeans. This versatile shoe is a must-have in your closet and is begging to be worn 12 months a year. So be bold, be brave and break out your 50 shades of white this season.

Music review: Neon Hitch -- "Love You Better"

$

This is one gorgeous redhead that you need to remember. In her single, "Love You Better," she addresses the age-old catfight between the "ex" versus the "new girl."

Neon Hitch at Wango TangoNo, Ke$ha didn't get a face transplant, because even then, we would be left with her glittery, sloppy body.

This is Neon Hitch, who recently collaborated on Gym Class Heroes' hit, "@$$ Back Home." With a similar overt-sexuality, Neon could be compared to Ke$sha , but they are night and day even in that sub-category.

Even though it should be impossible, have you ever dated a guy who moved on? Well, this is your next anthem .

With a revised radio-friendly version of the original "F U Better," the renamed "Love U Better" was released. This version isn't as harsh or vulgar because it isn't as blatant, but the suggestion is there. Exes need not ever feel insecure, because the message is strong: "She can love you good/But I can love you better."

Her trippy, seductive voice sounds vengeful when she first talks about the new girl "creeping" into his life. I love homewreckers, don't you? They make the best inspiration for music, books, Lifetime movies... murder, but I digress. But then her dynamic voices transitions into sass then innocent purr as the song goes on.

Her website reveals Benny Blanco is the fierce and highly successful songwriter and producer behind this mesmerizing track. And if you thought that maybe he inspired her wild performance in the above video, you have another thought coming.

Neon Hitch grew up as a trapeze artist and street performer. Between her soft purrs and feisty exclamations, you will realize her music is multidimensional. The music is upbeat and enticing, and so is her voice. The lyrics are wild, as is her performance.

Neon Hitch - F U Betta [Official Music Video]

This is definitely an in-your-face radio hit. You won't want to sip a glass of wine when listening, you may want to break the whole bottle over an old picture frame .

You just may go a little crazy, but not Karmin crazy. Almost guaranteed, this is the song you need to hear if you have been hurting over a past relationship . Hit play. Next stop, empowerment.

Lessons from fashion muses: Tap into your signature style

Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Joan Crawford and that mom at school pick up that always looks cute all have a common bond: a signature style. Through their fashion choices, their personalities loom like a halo over their heads. However, many women don’t necessarily have a "signature look." In fact, the very notion of trends is terrifying.
Fashion meets personality

What's your style?

Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Joan Crawford and that mom at school pick up that always looks cute all have a common bond: a signature style. Through their fashion choices, their personalities loom like a halo over their heads. However, many women don’t necessarily have a "signature look." In fact, the very notion of trends is terrifying.

If you have lived for years mystified by what happens on runways, red carpets and hyped paparazzi shots in gossip magazines, call upon your dormant SAT studying skills and study fashion divas of the 20th century. Your study materials are:

Fashion Icons: Fashion Trends Throughout the Century
Star Style
The Marchesa Casati: Portraits of a Muse

Go to Barnes & Noble and purchase Fashion Icons: Fashion Trends Throughout the Century, Star Style, The Marchesa Casati: Portraits of a Muse, and start thumbing through. Eccentric? Yes, but absolutely scintillating. Learn about silhouettes. Discover accessories. Investigate muses like Marchesa Casati, the dynamic Diana Ross, the chic socialite Babe Paley, the '60s siren Edie Sedgwick, the boho babe Talitha Getty and the art deco diva Nancy Cunard.

stacked Bracelets

These histrionic women dissed convention and used fashion to express themselves. Such bravado is evident in their outré fashion choices: gowns as daywear, turbans, shoulder sweeping earrings, extreme eye makeup, stacked-to-the-elbows bangle bracelets and cloaks fashioned of peacock feathers.

Don’t feel pressured to swap your skinny jeans for an electric blue jumpsuit. Just get inspired. Then, take it down a notch to reality.

TV shows and movies in a fashion moment

In your free time, let your fingers do the walking right over to Netflix. "Fashion moment" TV shows and films are a great way to research style and learn about silhouettes.

How to determine your body type

$
0
0
Fashion is all about dressing your body. If you know your body shape — and every woman should — then you will be able to find clothes that fit and flatter.

Celebrities with different body types

Determine and embrace your body shape

Body shape is all about proportion, and fashion is all about dressing those proportions to look their very best.

When you think about body types, don't focus on height and weight... focus on shape. A slender gal can have the same body shape as a curvy gal, just as a short woman can have the same body shape as her taller friend.

Each of us is unique — and our bodies are, too! Nevertheless, our body shapes are generally narrowed down to five general categories: pear, wedge, rectangle, apple and hourglass. You might fall into one category, or you might be a blend of two or more categories.

Once you've determined your body shape, you can begin to consider which fashion trends to embrace and which to avoid. Spend some time in front of the mirror and do a fair and honest assessment of your body. Then put these fashion tips to work for you!

1

Pear body shape

Pear body shape

Pear-shaped celebrities: Kim Kardashian, Eva Mendes, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Katherine Heigl

  • Pear body traits: Your lower body is wider than your upper body — in other words, your hips are wider than your shoulders. Your bottom is rounded and your waist is well-defined.
  • Your best assets: Shoulders, torso and flat stomach
  • Your fashion goals: Emphasize your waist and arms, add volume to your shoulders and upper body and minimize your hips.

Kim Kardashian has a pear shaped body typs

Dos and don'ts

If your body is pear-shaped like Kim Kardashian's, then you want to minimize your lower half and focus attention upward.

  • DON'T wear clothing that draws attention to hips and thighs, such as cargo pants or print skirts.
  • DO try a-line skirts, which camouflage wider hips.
  • DO keep hems of pants, skirts and dresses wide to balance the hips.
  • DO experiment with light-colored tops and dark-colored bottoms for contrast.
  • DO look for boat neck tops, square and cowl necklines.
  • DO wear strapless dresses to show off arms and even out proportions.
  • DO try styles with ruffles on top.
  • DO wear jackets that hit right above the waist.
  • DO opt for pointy-toed shoes to elongate your legs.

Wedge or inverted triangle body shape

2

Wedge body shape

Wedge-shaped celebs: Naomi Campbell, Demi Moore, Renee Zellweger, Teri Hatcher

  • Wedge body traits: Also known as the inverted triangle, this body shape features a broad chest and wide shoulders which are large in proportion to a narrow waist and hips.
  • Your best asset: Your legs
  • Your fashion goals: Accentuate your lower body while softening your shoulders and upper body.

Audrina Patridge has a wedge body shape; also called inverted triangle body type

Dos and don'ts

If you have a wedge body like Audrina Patridge's, then you want to draw attention downward to the narrower parts of your body, such as your waist and hips.

  • DO wear bright colors on bottom.
  • DO wear wide-leg pants.
  • DO wear full skirts.
  • DON'T wear spaghetti-strap tops.
  • DON'T wear boat neckline tops.
  • DO wear tops that call attention to your waistline.
  • DO experiment with high-waisted styles.
  • DO look for clothes that create the illusion of a waist.

Rectangle body shape

3

Rectangle body shape

Rectangle-shaped celebs: Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Hilary Swank

  • Rectangle body traits: The waist, hip and shoulder widths are similar and are usually on the slim side. Slender rectangles have an athletic look about them.
  • Your best assets: Your arms and legs — and you don't have to minimize any body features.
  • Your fashion goals: Create curves and show off slender legs and arms.

Natalie Portman has a rectangle shaped body type

Dos and don'ts

If your body is rectangle-shaped like Natalie Portman's, then you want to create curves where they don't necessarily exist.

  • DO wear scoop neck and sweetheart tops to create curves.
  • DO wear long jackets to create a lean look.
  • DO wear tops with collars, ruffles and details to flatter your chest.
  • DO wear a good bra that will make the most of what you have.
  • DON'T wear overwhelming styles.
  • DO layer to add more dimensions.
  • DO wear dresses with ruching. Cinches on sides are ideal.
  • DO have fun with colorful bottoms... feel free to experiment.

Apple body shape

4

Apple body shape

Apple-shaped celebs: Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Hudson

  • Apple body traits: Most of your weight accumulates above the hips, which are narrow. Your back, ribs and shoulders are broad, and you may feel wider than other body types.
  • Your best asset: Those legs!
  • Your fashion goals: Elongate the torso, show off your legs and use fashion to create the illusion of a waist.

Jennifer Hudson has an apple shaped body type

Dos and don'ts

If you have an apple-shaped body like Jennifer Hudson's, then you want to elongate your midsection and create the illusion of a smaller waist.

  • DO go for monochromatic looks.
  • DO go for v-neck tops to create the illusion of a longer torso.
  • DO wear a bra that offers good lift and support.
  • DO wear belts at the smallest part of your waist.
  • DO conceal tummy bulge by wearing empire tops and dresses.
  • DO wear boot cut and flared jeans to create an even line from the shoulders down.
  • DO wear shorter skirts to show off your legs and draw attention away from your midsection.

Hour glass body shape

5

Hourglass body shape

Hourglass-shaped celebs: Beyonce, Salma Hayek, Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, Vanessa Minnillo

  • Hourglass body traits: Your shoulders and hips are similar in proportion and set off by a tiny waist.
  • Your best assets: Curves, curves, curves!
  • Your fashion goals: Show off your curves... without going overboard.

Beyonce Knowles has an hourglass shaped body type

Dos and don'ts

If your body is hourglass-shaped like Beyonce's, then you're a lucky girl! Your shape is all about tastefully showing off those curves: not too baggy, not too tight.

  • DON'T hide your curves with baggy clothing.
  • DO wear a good bra and showcase your bust.
  • DO wear fitted dresses.
  • DO wear a belt at the waist to enhance your hourglass shape.
  • DO try wrap dresses.
  • DO go for high-waisted skirts to show off your hips.
  • DO pick thin, lightweight styles and fabrics.
  • DO wear skinny or straight leg jeans.

Create a clothing line

Eadon Sisters Big Rich Atlanta

Just like the Eadon sisters, the fashionable belles of Big Rich Atlanta who are working with their mom to start their own clothing line, you can start an in-house operation to channel your creativity into a stylish and wearable work of art. If you're interested but not quite sure where to start, put together a style diary with images of some of your favorite looks, colors, textiles and inspirations.

Test ideas and sketches without spending a fortune at the fabric store. Instead, take a trip to your local thrift stores, and try upcycling old clothes into new couture. Start with a few simple pieces to create one look and go from there. Above all, don't be afraid to fail. When it comes to creative design, playing it safe is not likely to make an impact.

perfume bottleDevelop a custom fragrance

There is nothing more fashionable than feeling amazing even when you have nothing on. Create a boutique fragrance that reflects the epitome of your personal style. To get started, find a local perfumery that offers custom scents and that can help you find the perfect aroma notes to build a fragrance that is all you. Even if you don't use them all, keep a journal of fragrances you like and dislike as well as what perfumes and oils work well together. In the future, you can work through fragrance shops online to design new fragrances for yourself, your family and your friends.

makeupMake your own makeup

Complete a look that's all you with a makeup palette that you've put together completely on your own. Start the process by finding a do-it-yourself cosmetic supply store online. Essential Wholesale and Labs and DIY Cosmetics are good resources to get you started. Look for ready-to-use ingredients that meet your personal standards. There are many naturally derived, organic and hypo-allergenic options. Also, don't forget to pick up the equipment that you'll need to press, label and package your new line. For your first attempt at making makeup, you may want to purchase a kit or even take a class locally to help get the feel for it.

The sky's the limit

Why stop at clothing, makeup and perfume when there are so many fashionable avenues to express your creativity? Try your hand at making unique accessories, custom shoes or even royal-inspired fascinators. If you can dream it, you can make it — fabulous.

Q&A with Courtney Allegra

The 15-year-old fashion phenom chats with us about her designs, fashion inspirations and hopes for the future.

In high school, most girls are worrying about academics, boys and hanging out with friends. But 15-year-old Courtney Allegra worries about building her fashion empire.

The young design star, first shown to the world at Hollywood’s Top Designer event in 2012, has put herself on the fast track to being a style powerhouse.

The San Diego native, budding actress, model and equestrian champion credits her serious passion and the support of her family for her overwhelming success. With her collection now up on her new website, Allegra details how her dream became a reality as well as what’s coming up next for her.

SheKnows: How did your passion for design come about?

Courtney Allegra: I’ve been designing since I was a little girl. I love it. I started sketching my ideas first but it was just for fun, just for me. My mom told me I should start manufacturing my own stuff. I entered my designs into a fashion show. After that I made my website and that was it. I decided it would be better if I could share my stuff with people!

SK: You first showcased your line at Hollywood’s Top Designer last spring. What was that experience like?

CA: I loved it! I was nervous at first, but once the clothes started going down the runway, it got easier and I got more excited. People really received it well and it got me some great coverage. I just felt better because everything turned out great.

SK: Your current collection boasts a lot of edge and individuality. What was the idea behind this line?

CA: Well, I actually wanted to do more of a goth line originally and then I blended more goth and urban styles for a more modern look. I love studs and leather, so that all fit in. I’m actually starting to incorporate more corsets into the line too.

SK: Who are some of your top designer inspirations?

CA: Armani, definitely. I love their leathers and funny story, but I went into their store once and saw that they use the same hot pink leather that I use, so that was hilarious! Dolce & Gabbana is also a favorite.

SK: You’ve said that your travels have influenced your designs. Is there any place or particular culture that you’ve pulled from for inspiration?

CA: Actually in France, I got to go to this mountainside village and see all of the variety and colors and interact with the people, so I was inspired by that. Also in Toulon, France, they had this lavender ice cream that was in this beautiful lilac kind of color and I loved that so I’ve incorporated the lilacs and lavender shades into some of my designs.

SK: Who are some of your favorite style icons today?

CA: Oh gosh, this is a hard one! I’d say Adam Lambert, Jennifer Lawrence and Selena Gomez. I love their looks.

SK: Can you share any info about the designs that you’re currently working on?

CA: I’m working on a lot of light colors and even Chinese-inspired corsets with Geisha colors and prints. It’s a big shift — it’s really different. I wanted to add a touch of variety and some new things for summer.

SK: What advice do you have for other aspiring artists?

CA: Stay focused. Especially if you’re a teen, it’s easy to get distracted with different things. Just keep that focus on everything you do.

It can be rare that you and your man get a night out without the kids, so take the time to pamper yourself and get all dolled up. No matter how tired you may feel, putting in the extra effort will make your night that much better!

Date nights with your man are quite possibly the most important nights out you may have. It's a special time to reconnect and shed the mommy/daddy title for a few hours.

On this night, it's all about the two of you! So, when choosing what to wear, make sure you take into consideration what your guy likes to see you in. And then combine that with what makes you feel cute and sassy to create the perfect date night outfit!

Summer's outfit

Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE my boots. I wear them all year-round in every color, shape and style. So when there's a date on the calendar, it's more than likely I'll be busting out a pair of my favorite boots. And while I change up my date night outfits depending on the event, this is definitely a go-to dress that makes me feel less like a mom and more like the girl my husband knew in the good ol' dating days.

How to transition your shoe wardobe into spring

The sun is finally coming out and we could not be more excited to slip into a new shoe wardrobe. Turn up the music, grab your storage bins and get ready to trade your winter favorites for springtime shoes!
Red flats in grass

The sun is finally coming out and we could not be more excited to slip into a new shoe wardrobe. Turn up the music, grab your storage bins and get ready to trade your winter favorites for springtime shoes!

How to... make the
shoe fit the season

The timing of your shoe wardrobe transition might depend on where you live, but no matter where you reside, it's time to march into a whole new set of shoe choices.

Step 1: Think of the endless opportunities

You don’t have to say "Sayonara" to the booties you wore to the office all winter long, just a "See you later" to the tights you accessorized them with. The winter-to-spring shoe transition is an opportunity to make your winter booties look brand-new by pairing them with cute dresses and skirts.

Step 2: Vote for straps before socks

Though we aren’t throwing our boots in a box for the attic, we are giving our flats, sandals and wedges first dibs on complementing our outfits. Flat-bottomed boots look beyond cute with spring clothes, but there’s no greater shoe for maxi dresses and high-low skirts than the perfect pair of sandals. Your daily spring shoe choices should not require you to wear as many socks as you wore in the winter, so let your feet breathe and soak up the sun.

Step 3: Go with the weather

Flowers are blossoming all over, so be one with the environment and adapt to brighter color. Fall and winter are about the burgundies and dark colors; now that spring is here we can finally brighten up our outfits—neon or pastels, depending on your mood. As long as the shoe involves a bit color it’s a definite winner this season. Check out these Aldo sandals we’re in love with.

Step 4: Sharing is caring

Try not to get into a shoe repetition. Those neutral-colored wedges go great with every outfit you plan; however, try not to always take the safe way out with accessories. Be bold and wear those colorful Inkkas that keep getting pushed into the back of your closet. Spring weather is the perfect time to experiment with your shoe options—let every pair get a chance to make a statement instead of sticking to your norm.

Step 5: Stay comfortable

Just because the sun is coming out does not mean you have to force your feet into those painful heels seven days a week. Although sometimes pain may bring beauty, it does not have to be a daily experience. Flats, low-top sneakers and sandals will look just as cute with your outfits. Stay cute and well-dressed by staying comfortable this season. Your feet will thank us later.

Friday's Fashion Fails: Justin Bieber and Leighton Meester

$

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Justin Bieber and Leighton Meester's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber

Let's all give a warm welcome to Justin Bieber as our very first male Fashion Fail! The Biebs is all grown up and he really wants us to know it. When he hit a red carpet in Sydney, Justin went for an '80s-inspired, denim-on-leather look. Check out his jean jacket, baggy leather pants and hightop sneakers.

Although Justin left his usual accessory, girlfriend Selena Gomez, home for this particular appearance, he did add a gold chain and stunner shades to his ensemble.

We're not immune to Bieber fever and Justin is a total cutie, but this fashion doesn't work for him. Leather pants should not be baggy and they should never be tucked into sneakers.

The final verdict? We love Justin's new mature musical sound , but he could use some styling help. Leather pants should always be tailored, and they'd look more chic with boots or loafers.

Leighton Meester

Leighton Meester

Hey, how did a homeless woman manage to sneak into the NYC premiere of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises? That was our first thought when we saw this shot, but it turns out this walking fashion fail is actually a Gossip Girl starlet! What would her fashionista character, Blair Waldorf, say about Leighton's hobo lady look?

We know even celebrities like to go casual and comfortable from time to time, but a major movie premiere is so not the place to slack in the fashion department. The giant tan sweater reminds us of a Snuggie, and just like Justin, Leighton's footwear is also all wrong: The floral print kicks don't work with a dress.

The final verdict? You don't always have to wear a couture gown, but there's a way to dress casually while still looking cute and camera-ready. She would have looked great in a pair of colored jeans or a sundress with wedges or flats. Leighton should save this look for when she's heading to the matinee solo, and not for an A-list premiere.

How to get that Hollywood glow

The Hollywood glow, found on the red carpet at every award show, can be done by everyday women too. Watch as the SheKnows.com celebrity makeup artist, Allison Pynn, demystifies the secret to this well-known Hollywood trick.

Live in the spotlight: How to karaoke like a star

Woman doing Karaoke

How
to be a Karaoke rock star

If the idea of crooning in front of a crowd makes you nervous because you last went to a karaoke bar in 1998, we have a few ideas on how to feel confident and stylish while singing your heart out like a rock star.

Karaoke tip #1: Get the look

Even if Beyonce's epic Super Bowl 2013 performance is the source of your resurrected interest in karaoke, save your tiny leather bodysuit for mixing things up in the boudoir instead. You can still channel your inner diva by flaunting hints of metallic or neon in your karaoke outfit. These bold colors are on-trend for the spring season and they're definitely edgy and sexy. We like the idea of a fitted metallic blouse with skinny jeans and neon pumps. Beyonce will have nothing on you!

Karaoke tip #2: Play with makeup

Green eyeshadow

While a natural look is always a safe bet, spring trends are beginning to feature bold jewel tones for the face and nails. Try out just one bright color at a time, and have fun with it! The dark lighting in karaoke bars is more forgiving than daylight, so feel free to experiment with plum lipstick of midnight blue eyeliner. Metallic silver swept across your eyelids is also an easy way to update your look with a touch of glamour. Besides, giving yourself an outrageous new look just might be what you need to gain outrageous confidence on the karaoke stage .

Karaoke tip #3: Choose your song wisely

When you arrive at a karaoke bar, the extensive list of available songs may feel overwhelming. The key to a good karaoke selection is to find a tune that will show off your vocal talents without looking like you're trying too hard. As a general rule, try to stay away from artists like Celine Dion or Josh Groban. Save their ballads for singing in your car or shower because nothing good will ever come from singing "My Heart Will Go On" in front of strangers.

Of course, you can always head to a karaoke bar and page through the lists until you find a song that's just right. But if you like to feel prepared, check out a few well-known '80s, '90s, and '00s hits that are within your vocal range. The more recognizable the song, the more likely it is that the crowd will croon with you. Remember, you're trying to project an image that says, "I'm casual, I'm sexy and I'm here to party," rather than "I'm desperate to be discovered by a talent agent and/or man."

Karaoke tip #4: Find the right venue

Believe it or not, several creative entrepreneurs maintain websites that exist solely to help avid karaoke singers find the perfect venue whenever they have an itch to belt out Def Leppard. Next time you find yourself with the karaoke urge, you can head to one of these websites to find a bar. If you're a little nervous about going to a karaoke bar that's featured on an official karaoke website lest you find yourself an amateur surrounded by die-hards, Yelp also has up-to-date karaoke listings for a city near you.

And if you are, in fact, a die-hard, Travel and Leisure Magazine features a compilation of the best karaoke bars in America so you could possibly plan a whole vacation around drinking and singing off tune. Fun!
